» How did you hear about us? Oh, I think you know... *shifty eyes*
.the myth;
» God(dess): Melinoe
» Reference: Here annnnnd here.
» Family: {mother & father} Persephone and Zeus
» Played By: Feyne
» Human Alias: Marilee Green
» Human Age: 23
» God of...: Propitiations offered to ghosts; essentially, appeasing them.
» Flair: Communication with ghosts; at least those who are stuck. This seems to hit her more in the mortal life if she's around a higher-activity area, such as a hospital, cemetery or a former battlefield-essentially anywhere that someone's (or a lot of someones) have died. She hears voices fairly plainly, and though she has learned to tune them out, they seem to find ways of getting her to pay attention if she's taking too long ("Can I please sleep?" Why? "Oh, piss off. You remember sleep. I need that. For like, nine hours.") One of their favorites is showing themselves as they looked when they passed, usually the ones who didn't go particularly peacefully. This, too, she seems to manage fairly well if she paces herself, and it comes easier if the place is one of minimal activity, such as a grocery store.
» Flair Type: Continuous
» Fitting in: Working in a mortuary. She prepares the bodies for funerals after embalming by dressing them and making them up. Some of the staff think she's a bit odd--mainly because she talks to the corpse while getting them ready for their curtain call. In reality, she's speaking to their ghost or whomever might just be hanging around to pass the time--either theirs or hers.
» History: There isn't much written on the being of Melinoe, aside from the usually accepted story that resident manwhore Zeus took the form of Hades and decided to sleep with Persephone, resulting in the birth of dear Melinoe, limbs half-white because of Zeus's brilliance on Mt. Olympus, half-black because of Persephone's residing in the Underworld.
She was given the goddess-ly task of making sure that the propitiations offered to the ghosts who were bound to the earth made them happy, which you can imagine isn't necessarily the greatest job, ever. Melinoe walked the earth at night with a troupe of ghosts and from what the myth states is the reason that dogs bark at absolutely 'nothing' in the middle of the night, assuming that they sense things beyond your run-of-the-mill human.
It's also said that Melinoe is the Orphic name for Hekate, though the latter is generally associated with being the goddess of witchcraft, magic, and the night.
» Personality: Ah, Melinoe. She's really quite sweet once you get to know her, but after dealing with grumpy and often just-plain-pissy ghosts, she puts her guard up quite often; more stoic than she probably knows what to do with because of them. She finds it difficult to complain much about anything, but when she does--when it finally hits the breaking point, it's pretty intense (anywhere from sobbing uncontrollably to breaking things and screaming) and straight from the soul. Meli really does like being happy. Music, movies (especially old movies), books, gummy candy, perfume and flowers make her happy. It's the getting to the point that is the hardest part when the ghosts are especially restless and when she's in a higher activity area, such as near a hospital.
To counteract the spirits that give her grief, she speaks very plainly to them. She tries ever so hard to convince them that whatever they were trying to finish on the planet was, indeed, finished. And that they can go to the next life--whatever that may be for them. This works reasonably well with small children (who for Melinoe are the most heartbreaking), but when it comes to bullheaded adults, well... they follow her around like children might, and they seem to be the ones who cause her the most grief when they want her attention. Fortunately for her, she can tune it out to stay sane a lot of the time. Just not for very long. Her 'wards' seem to only want to come out at night, during those 'witching/trinity' hours of 12, 3 and 6. While time may not really exist as a real thing to them, they seem to have it down.
All this leads Meli to sleep during the day most of the time, and for her mortal job, the funeral directors don't seem to mind ("They're not going anywhere. Just have them ready for their date by tomorrow afternoon.").
When it comes to her parents, Melinoe loves and adores Persephone and Hades. She truly is a daddy's girl, though Hades can be reasonably cold, as it were and is very doting on her mother. The problem lies with the fact that Zeus is, indeed, her father and, well, Meli just doesn't know it. Not yet, anyway. If and when she does discover this tidbit, she'll likely alienate herself from Hades--the only father she's ever really known-- and just might hate Persephone for a little while. Only until she realizes that Zeus was being typical Zeus and deciding that someone needed to be raped by him and a baby was needed in the process, that is.
And dogs? Melinoe is terrified of them, especially since they've been barking at her as long as she can remember. This could possibly make any effort to befriend Cerberus in the future quite interesting, but Cerberus had always been a good dog to especially Hades, so that makes him different. Papa's pup wouldn't hurt her. It's those other mortal dogs that are loathsome.
She loves cats, though. They seem to like her back.
Meli also desires to have something of a normal friendship with...anybody. The ghosts make it difficult from time to time, when they want the attention that she just doesn't want to give right then. She finds it tiring in this mortal body to tune them all out when they want to be heard, but some days are easier than others. And she is thankful for that.
» Sample Journal:
Is it wrong of me to want to kick the bloody toy poodle up the street from work? Because that little bastard is grating my nerves in the worst way. Why in the world would anyone want a creature that gives off that terrible high-pitched yapping?
Seriously. No one would miss it. It disturbs the families of the dearly departed during the services. I'm just glad they do not know it's me that is the problem.
» Sample Roleplay:
She was so weird.
They all thought she was weird. Melinoe had heard them talking amongst themselves while she took a break. She'd been there for three days and already had a few conversations with those who had been brought in while she made them up for their final performance. "Is she nuts? Is she a necro? What the hell is with her? I don't know but she does a better job than any of the rest of us."
In time, they would figure out that the conversations 'Marilee' was having with their clients really did match up to their former professions when she would ask about them, or their children. Or their hobbies. None of them knew what to make of her, but she was more comfortable than anyone had ever been when dealing with this job.
Melinoe finished working on a 102-year-old lady who had been a nun before she left to start a family, almost a'la "Sound of Music" when her boss came in.
"Hey, Marilee?" asked Joe as the dark-haired woman washed her hands.
"Yes, Joe?" Meli looked over at him with blue eyes that one might register on a color scale as 'cornflower'.
Joe shifted a bit uncomfortably as he waited for his employee to dry her hands. "I just want you to know you're doing a fantastic job. I've never seen someone work as well as you do. But..." He sighed, leaning against the wall.
"But?" Melinoe chuckled darkly and found a frown in the process. "Joe, are you letting me go?"
He shook his head quickly. "No! Geeze, no. I doubt I could find someone like you in a million years. It's just... You're kind of freaking everyone else out. Having conversations with the bodies as though they're actually talking back."
She kept that frown and sighed herself. Meli had to remember that regular, modern mortals who didn't have a 'gift' would not understand her ways. "It's... just my way of trying to see if I can understand how this person really was in life, even if it isn't them talking back to me." Well, they were, but Joe didn't need to know that. "I know this dear lady was a nun and a mother and I tried to envision her loving and devoting herself to her Christ and a family of her own later." And the woman had done both. Melinoe didn't quite understand Jesus Christ and Christianity as a whole, but sometimes they would tell her about it. "That's all. I don't mean to scare everyone. " Her features softened and Joe relaxed.
"Right, then." He patted her arm with a nod and turned to leave. "Just... keep it down or turn the radio on for now. Have a good night, Marilee. See you tomorrow."
The dear old lady smiled up at Melinoe. "What a darling man. It's a shame they'd put you in the loony bin if you told them the truth. It's all right, dear. We won't tell." The now-mortal goddess smiled right back.
"I know. It's those that are like you that make me happy that I can speak with you. You look lovely, Enid. Your family will miss you, and so will I when you move on."
